Message from the Principal

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Over the past several years, and especially this past semester, teachers and administrators at Jeffers High School have noticed a growing concern: many students are struggling socially, emotionally, and academically in ways that are beyond what we would normally expect.

We see students who are anxious, distracted, easily overwhelmed, or unsure how to handle everyday challenges. This is not the fault of anyone. It reflects broader changes that families and schools everywhere are navigating together.

At Jeffers, we are fortunate to be part of a community that values family, responsibility, and common sense. We believe families play the most important role in raising healthy, resilient young people. Our role as a school is to support that foundation during the school day.

One clear obstacle to learning and healthy development has become increasingly apparent: smartphones.

Research and daily classroom experience show that constant access to phones during the school day reduces focus, increases anxiety, and limits meaningful face-to-face interaction. Even when not in use, phones pull students’ attention away from learning and from one another.

For this reason, Jeffers High School is considering a smartphone-free school day beginning next fall. Students will be expected to keep their phones powered off and stored away during the entire school day. This decision is being considered with students’ best interests in mind. These benefits include:

Fewer distractions and greater focus

Real, in-person social interaction

Clear boundaries and consistent expectations

A school environment centered on learning and relationships

We recognize that smartphones are part of modern life, and families ultimately decide how technology is used outside of school. During the school day, however, we believe students benefit from a protected environment where they can fully engage in learning and relationships.

We encourage families to watch this informative video that breaks down concerning data related to smartphone usage (CLICK HERE. It offers valuable insight into the impact smartphones and social media have on young people and highlights the importance of strong family support and boundaries. We invite you to an open discussion on March 4th at 6:00 p.m., where we’ll review the video and share insight related to smartphone usage in the school setting.

This change will be most effective with your partnership. When schools and families work together with shared expectations, students thrive.

Thank you for your continued support as we put students’ long-term well-being first.

Sincerely,
John Sanregret
High School Principal
